The first product created by Bausan was a wild rosemary and lavender essential oil, he creating this using steam distillation. He sold this at open air markets in Provence. Just two years later Bausen opened his first boutique in Volx, Provence and began producing a wider range of vegetable based soaps using traditional methods. This production took place in a disused soap factory Manosque, Provence which is still the company’s main base today.

In 1996 Reinold Geiger became the majority stakeholder in L’Occitane and appointed Olivier Bausen creative director who had been less involved in the day to day management of the business since he sought investment years earlier. The company looked to begin international expansion and renamed the brand L’Occitane en Provence keeping with roots of the brand.

Since 1996 the company has expanded into North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. The company has stayed true to it’s ethos of reflecting Provence, still manufacturing and producing it’s products in Manosque, Provence.

As a company which began using natural ingredients and processes, it continues to promote equality and environmentally friendly methods. L’Occitane en Provence purchases shea butter directly from womens groups in Burkina Faso to encourage fair trade. The company also supports the cultivation of almond trees in the Alps and plants it’s own fields of rare flowers. The company uses organic ingredients and does not test on animals.

In 2006 The L’Occitane en Provence Foundation was established to support the visually impaired and strive for the economic emancipation of women.
